Position: CTE Career Counselor

The CTE Career Counselor plays a vital role in supporting student success in both academic, interpersonal skills and career development. This position focuses on implementing district-approved curriculum and career readiness initiatives, which include but are not limited to High School & Beyond Plans (HSBPs), Dual Credit, Cascadia Technical Academy (CTA) program/student enrollment and Career-Related Learning Experiences (CRLEs), while helping students connect their interests and strengths to postsecondary pathways.

The counselor provides instruction, guidance, and support to ensure students are on track for graduation and well-prepared for life after high school. This includes maintaining accurate documentation of progress, addressing individual educational needs, and fostering a safe, inclusive, and productive learning environment.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.  Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: controlling and motivating students; maintaining accurate records; and using pertinent software applications (Google Suite, Microsoft Suite, Qmlativ, SchooLinks, etc); adhering to safety practices; operating standard office equipment.

 

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform some math operations; read a variety of manuals, write documents created on own as well as following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and solve practical problems.  Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: knowledge of state and federal laws that govern school districts, age appropriate activities, stages of child development, and safety practices and procedures, including those surrounding student workers, therefore this position must hold or obtain a Washington State CTE Teacher certification and Worksite Learning Certification. 

 

ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use basic, job-related equipment.  Flexibility is required to work independently or with others in a wide variety of circumstances; to work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and to operate equipment using defined methods.  Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; to work with similar types of data; and to utilize specific, job-related equipment.   Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans.  Problem solving with data requires analysis based on organizational objectives; and problem solving with equipment is moderate to significant.  Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: fostering positive professional relationships (with individuals and businesses in and outside of the WSD); communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines and schedules; working as part of a team; and working with frequent interruptions. This position requires the employee to transport students so annual van/transportation training is required.

 

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; and operating within a defined budget.  Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job’s functions.  There is a continual opportunity to significantly impact the organization’s services.   

 

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 50% walking, and 40% standing.  The job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.



Experience: Job related experience is desired.   Education: Master’s degree in job related area
